UNFORTUNATELY, DUE TO LACK OF SUPPORT THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN CANCELLED.

KCHS-CBDHS-EES Ex-Student Memorial - Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, Kilgore, Texas

KCHS-CBDHS-EES-Ex Student Memorial Site News

The initial rendering of the KCHS-CBDHS Memorial Site is attached. We are finally moving forward with the help of the Kilgore College Design and Drafting Department.

Please note that the center cube will be taller and display the photos of Mr. Dansby, Mr. Turner and Mr. Daniels. The fourth side will display the school song, school colors and mascot.

The center panel of the wall will be slightly taller than the other six panels. It will carry the KCHS-CBDHS history. The other six panels will be scored in a brick like manner and each brick will be inscribed per the designation of the purchaser. Tentatively each brick will allow for three lines of one-inch type.

The short column on the right will display all the names of the faculty and staff.

The number of benches will vary based upon the number that will be purchased by alumni. The benches will be inscribed per the wishes of the purchaser.

There will also be a small slab of the brick from the school embedded in the concrete slab.

The site will be located behind the tennis courts in the City Park on Martin Luther King Drive. The City of Kilgore has granted us with the rights of public space for private use and will maintain the grounds surrounding the memorial. To get an idea of the size of the memorial you can visit the Veteran's Memorial on the corner of South Commerce and Harris Street in Kilgore; located directly in front of Driller Park.

The memorial is NOT to be confused with the Texas Historical Marker which will be the second phase of the Memorial Committee's efforts. We will make application for the marker in November, 2015 to the Gregg County Historical Commission. If you have any information or photos to submit please do so as soon as possible. We have also been granted the rights of public space for private use by the City to place in the right-of-way on the Dansby site on Bates Street. More information will be issued soon.

The drawing is being sent to you today for your input. Please know in advance that we cannot make all adjustment and make everyone happy; but we are seeking to make the memorial the best that it can possibly be.  If you have any suggestions regarding the memorial site you will need to submit it in WRITING to me at this email address or via snail mail to KCHS-CBDHS-EES Ex-Student Association, 6144 Gateway Center, PMB 142, Kilgore, TX 75662.

We will only be able to allow a one-time input time frame. We will only ask the staff at Kilgore College to tweak the drawing once since they are doing this at no charge to our organization. Once the final drawing is in place we will start getting construction quotes. Upon determining the cost to erect we will contact the alumni with further information. Please share this email with those that don't have access to email.

If you would like to help with fundraising to help reduce alumni contribution in purchasing bricks and benches please contact Saundria Roberson at 469-335-6664 or email at sroberson3610@att.net

If you would like to work on the Memorial Committee please contact Chairlady, Berenice Gray at 832-321-3488.

Sincerely,
